If you’re coming to Iceland to celebrate your love, consider adding a helicopter tour. It’s honestly one of the most memorable experiences you’ll remember for the rest of your lives. Many couples who are eloping tell us they wish they had discovered this possibility sooner, as it transforms the entire day into something even more meaningful. When planning a helicopter elopement in Iceland, there are a few crucial things to consider to make the day intentional and well prepared. Last summer in 2025, during our own wedding in Romania, we laid the foundation for guiding other couples through this important step in their lives. Through our personal experience, we understand what truly matters and what is needed to make this moment feel right.

Through years of living, working and listening to this land, we have learned how to hold space for beginnings that truly matter. We are guardians of love at the threshold of a new chapter, creating a protected and intentional space where the immense power of Iceland can flow into your ceremony and from there into your marriage and the life you build together.

Based here on this island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, we are deeply connected to the rhythms of nature and the forces that shape this island. We will guide you with presence, care and respect. The energy of the land becomes part of your vows, carried forward as strength, grounding and remembrance in the years ahead. As Hermann Hesse wrote, “Every beginning holds a magic within it.” Our work is to safeguard that magic, to hold it gently, so it can grow with you and remain a living part of your shared story. This is the essence of what we do. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to plan a helicopter elopement in Iceland, from the perfect season to the right helicopter and the magical day itself.

Planning a Helicopter Iceland Elopement: Key Things to Know

Where Precision, Safety and Storytelling Align

Planning a helicopter elopement in Iceland requires careful thought and preparation. There are several key factors that can make the difference between a smooth, meaningful experience and unnecessary stress. From our own experiences of guiding couples, as well as our work as guides in Iceland, we know what is truly essential.

We act as photographers and videographers, capturing every moment, and as planners and guides. It is absolutely essential to have someone by your side who understands Iceland’s unique weather and environmental conditions and at the same time, someone who can focus entirely on photography and videography. This dual role ensures that our couples can fully enjoy the experience without worrying about logistics or missing out on capturing the perfect moments. Additionally, for any aspect that we cannot cover ourselves, we have a trusted network of experts who join our team to ensure every element of this important experience is handled professionally.

Key considerations include understanding weather patterns, choosing the right locations planning timing and logistics, ensuring safety during the flight and coordinating photography and ceremony details. By focusing on these elements, our couples can fully immerse themselves in the experience, knowing that every detail has been thoughtfully arranged. The goal is to create an elopement that feels effortless and personal, allowing you to focus on each other while the landscape and the flight provide the backdrop. With the right preparation and guidance, a helicopter elopement in Iceland becomes a powerful ceremony and a lasting memory that supports and strengthens the bond of our couples for years to come.

Choosing the Best Season for a Helicopter Elopement in Iceland

At Lovers of the North, we are committed to respecting the nature and culture of Iceland. We guide our couples carefully and ensure that our core philosophy of giving back, rather than taking from nature, is upheld. As part of this commitment, we carbon offset all activities we plan with our couples, especially flight experiences, to minimize environmental impact.

When planning a helicopter elopement in Iceland, timing is crucial. The season you choose will determine not only the weather conditions but also daylight hours, landscape appearance and helicopter availability. Here’s a breakdown of the typical peak and off-peak seasons:

1. Summer (June to August), Peak Season

  • Long daylight hours allow for flexible flight and ceremony times.
  • Weather is generally milder, with less wind and more stable conditions.
  • Landscapes are vibrant and green, with accessible landing spots.
  • This is the most popular time, so booking in advance is essential.

2. Late Spring and Early Autumn (May, September), Shoulder Season

  • Still favorable weather, but fewer tourists, creating more private locations.
  • Daylight is sufficient for elopement flights and photography.
  • Landscapes show early blooms in May or autumn colors in September.
  • Slightly more unpredictable weather than summer, so flexibility is needed.

3. Winter (October to April), Off-Peak Season

  • Short daylight hours, with very limited windows for flights.
  • Weather can be unpredictable, with snow, wind or low visibility.
  • Ideal for couples seeking a dramatic, snowy, or northern lights backdrop.

When booking with us, we always have a backup plan, especially in winter. We work closely with a trusted travel agency in Iceland, so if weather conditions are too unfavorable, alternative options like a Super Jeep tour will be arranged. The advantage of booking with us is that we collaborate closely with our preferred helicopter companies and act as intermediaries here in Iceland, allowing us to always prioritize safety before profit. Choosing the right season depends on your priorities: daylight and accessibility, privacy, landscape aesthetics or a winter wonderland feel. We guide you in selecting the best season for your dream helicopter elopement, ensuring safety, comfort and powerful imagery.

From Takeoff to Touchdown: Your Iceland Helicopter Elopement Day

Carefully Planned, Professionally Guided, Fully Present

Your experience begins at Reykjavik Domestic Airport. You are met directly at the gate by the helicopter company as access to the airport grounds is only permitted when accompanied by staff for safety reasons. From there you are driven to the hangar where your helicopter is already waiting. On the way you get your first close look at the aircraft and the feeling that the day is about to begin. At the hangar we personally welcome you. We are the ones organizing the day and capturing every moment on camera. Before the flight a short safety briefing takes place during which the crew explains how everything works and what to pay attention to. It is a calm and structured moment that gives you time to take everything in. After the briefing you are escorted to the flight area. From that moment we begin documenting the experience, the walk toward the helicopter, the sound of the rotors and the first steps as you approach the aircraft. The crew assists you in boarding, checks that you are safely secured and ensures you feel comfortable before takeoff.

Once aboard the helicopter lifts off smoothly. At first you see the city of Reykjavik from above, but within minutes the view changes completely. Mountains, lakes and wide valleys begin to appear revealing Iceland’s vast and diverse landscape. During the flight we continue to photograph and film capturing both the scenery and the natural flow of the experience.

Water and light snacks are available on board to keep you comfortable. For couples celebrating an elopement or private ceremony we also bring a chilled bottle of champagne to enjoy after landing on a mountain or glacier.

The helicopter remains available throughout the experience allowing for multiple stops. You might land on a remote cliff in Hvalfjörður near the Glymur waterfall area or on Langjökull Glacier where a guide can accompany you for a short walk and additional photography. Each landing allows up to 90 minutes of ground time offering enough flexibility for exploration and creating a calm atmosphere for photos and video. At these remote locations, if weather and terrain conditions allow, we can also capture a very special sequence. The helicopter can take off while you remain on the ground. This creates a unique visual moment showing you standing together in the vast Icelandic landscape as the aircraft lifts off in the background. It is an impressive and symbolic image that perfectly complements the rest of the story.

After each stop the helicopter takes off again for the next location. The flights between these places are often among the most memorable parts of the experience as you pass over rivers, volcanoes and mountain ridges. Every route is planned according to the weather, light and your individual preferences making each journey unique. Eventually it is time to return to Reykjavik. As the helicopter approaches the city the view changes again from wild nature to the coastline and urban landscape. The landing is smooth and steady. After stepping out you can take a few last photos with the helicopter before heading back to the hangar for a short debrief with the crew. It is often a quiet and reflective moment after a day filled with excitement and new impressions. Since the helicopter flight is often part of a full day or multi day elopement the experience usually continues afterward. We often plan a visit to a nearby spa in Reykjavik such as Sky Lagoon for you to relax and reflect on the day. Pro tipp: You can land directly at a spa location such as Hvammsvík in Hvalfjörður allowing for a smooth transition from adventure to relaxation to end the day. By the time the day comes to an end most couples describe the experience as something truly memorable and complete, a day that combined Iceland’s landscape, the freedom of flight and the calm of being fully present together.

Best Helicopter Landing Locations for your Adventure Elopement in Iceland

Designed for Light, Landscape and Cinematic Moments

Iceland offers an incredible variety of landscapes, and one of the advantages of a helicopter elopement is the ability to reach locations that are otherwise difficult to access. From the moment you leave Reykjavik Domestic Airport or the Atlantsflug base in Skaftafell, the country opens up below you and each location provides a unique backdrop for your ceremony and photography. The flight times vary depending on the departure point and the number of stops, but every journey is designed to maximize the experience, comfort and light for photography.

Langjökull Glacier

Langjökull is the second largest glacier in Iceland and provides a dramatic backdrop for elopements. From Reykjavik Domestic Airport, the flight usually takes about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on weather and exact landing spot. From the Skaftafell base, it is longer, approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The glacier offers wide open spaces where the helicopter can land safely, and you can even combine a short hike guided by a professional. The ice formations, crevasses, and expansive views make it perfect for both intimate ceremonies and photography.

Hvalfjörður / Glymur Waterfall

Hvalfjörður is a fjord north of Reykjavik and near it lies Glymur, one of the tallest waterfalls in Iceland. The helicopter can land on a remote cliff near the waterfall or further away, offering a spectacular natural setting for your photos and ceremony. From Reykjavik, the flight is about 20 to 30 minutes. Even if you cannot land directly next to the waterfall, the surrounding cliffs and fjord views are stunning.

Landmannalaugar

Landmannalaugar is known for its colorful rhyolite mountains, lava fields, and hot springs. The helicopter can land in several locations to capture the best views and create a unique elopement setting. From Reykjavik, the flight takes around 40 to 50 minutes. The rugged landscapes allow for dramatic photos and depending on the season, you may see snow-capped peaks, green valleys or steaming geothermal areas.

Háifoss Waterfall

Háifoss is one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland, located in a remote valley. A helicopter landing nearby provides an incredible view of the waterfall and surrounding cliffs. From Reykjavik, the flight takes about 40 minutes. The dramatic drop of the waterfall, combined with the Icelandic highland scenery, makes it a breathtaking spot for photography and a ceremony in nature.

Reynisfjara Beach

The black sand beaches and basalt sea stacks of Reynisfjara near Vík are world-famous. A helicopter can land nearby or hover low to capture unique perspectives of the beach and ocean. From Reykjavik, it takes about 45 to 60 minutes, and from Skaftafell, around 20 to 25 minutes. The dramatic coastline provides a cinematic backdrop for any elopement.

Fimmvörðuháls Pass

The pass between Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers offers volcanic landscapes, lava fields, and remote vistas. Helicopter access allows you to land in areas that are otherwise difficult to reach, giving your elopement a truly adventurous setting. From Reykjavik, the flight is about 50 to 70 minutes, and from Skaftafell, it is 15 to 20 minutes. This is ideal for couples who want a dramatic, isolated, and natural environment for their ceremony.

Þingvellir National Park

Þingvellir combines history and nature, with rift valleys, lakes and cliffs. It is a perfect location for couples who want a sense of Icelandic heritage combined with natural beauty. From Reykjavik, the flight is 20 to 25 minutes. The helicopter allows you to land in areas that are usually hard to access and provides incredible views for photos.

Stokksnes / Vestrahorn

Stokksnes offers one of the most iconic mountain and coastline combinations in Iceland. The sharp peaks of Vestrahorn rise directly from black sand beaches, making it a visually stunning location. The flight from Reykjavik takes roughly 1 hour and 15 minutes, and from Skaftafell base it is about 30 to 40 minutes. Helicopter access allows for multiple photo stops along the coastline or on nearby dunes, creating an unforgettable setting.

From each departure point, the helicopter experience can be customized. You can combine several locations in a single flight or choose to focus on one remote site. Multiple stops allow for extended photo sessions at each location. The flight times between locations are part of the experience, giving you the opportunity to see Iceland from unique angles while capturing natural lighting and landscapes. Whether departing from Reykjavik Domestic Airport or from the Atlantsflug base near Skaftafell, the helicopter enables access to locations that are otherwise impossible to reach in a day, and it allows for highly flexible itineraries based on your preferences and the best light for photography.
